Your Path to the Right Diagnosis

Every child is unique, and when their unique traits include developmental delays or atypical behaviors, it might be a sign of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how a person interacts with  the world. Early intervention is vital for the child in order to be able to reach his full potential.

Professional assessments for autism will test different aspects of a child’s development and behavior, providing parents with valuable insights into their child’s needs, helping them thrive and reach their full potential.

Autism can present in different ways. Sometimes there are clear signs and symptoms, but not in all cases. At The Brain & Performance Centre, our assessment does  more than simply assess symptoms and their severity.

Our approach dives deeper to identify and understand the root causes of your child’s autism. Some children are born with ASD, while others start developing normally acquiring their basic milestones, and start regressing after a specific event (brain infection, head trauma, hypoxia and more). Our world-class assessment will help recognize the underlying factors contributing to your child’s symptoms.

We believe it’s not enough to characterize autism behaviors. Through a comprehensive testing of medical, cognitive, physical, metabolic and genetic  assessments, we explore the potential causes for ASD, some of which may be treatable.

Let us guide you through a comprehensive autism spectrum disorder assessments, empowering you to explore potential treatable causes and pave the way towards a brighter future for your child.

Our multidisciplinary team gains a comprehensive picture of your child’s health and medical history. The autism assessment at The Brain & Performance Centre follows these steps:

  • Detailed Medical Evaluation

This includes your child’s medical history, symptoms and when they appeared, and a timeline of developmental milestones and a comprehensive physical examination performed by our expert physicians.

  • Cognitive Assessments

Our Neuropsychology team will conduct evidence-based evaluations to look at your child’s social, communication, cognitive, and behavioral skills.

  • Neuropsychological Testing

If deemed appropriate, we may incorporate further neuropsychological tests to evaluate cognitive development, academic skills, and other brain functions.

  • Advanced Brain Imaging

A core part of our autism assessment is Advanced brain imaging, including: MRI and SPECT.

  • Laboratory & Genetic Testing:

Comprehensive genetic testing, metabolic panels and additional blood work including examination for neuroinflammation and altered immunity.

  • Occupational Therapy:

Our occupational therapists will perform an evaluation of your child testing for sensory perception abnormalities, everyday function.

  • Multidisciplinary Team Assessment

Your child’s multidisciplinary team collaborates to analyze all test results and form a diagnosis. With these integrated insights, our team develops personalized recommendations for your child’s best potential outcomes.

The Brain & Performance Centre offers a highly customized approach. Our thorough autism test process is managed seamlessly under one roof to set a solid foundation for effective treatment (based on your child’s specific needs, some tests may need to be performed outside of the clinic).

    Collaborative Evaluation
Specialists across multiple disciplines like pediatrics, neuropsychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and nutrition work together to gain a full understanding of your child’s needs.

    Dedicated Patient Coordinators
From their first consultation, your child is paired with a dedicated nurse to guide your family through every step, ensuring continuity of care during your child’s assessment journey.

    All-Encompassing Commitments
Occupational therapy assessments, sensory profiles, dietary evaluations, and other recommended tests are overseen by our clinical staff from beginning to end. If any tests are required outside the centre, your child’s 1:1 dedicated nurse accompanies you to manage the process.

    Cutting-Edge Genetic Analysis
Genetic factors can play a key role in ASD, which is why we emphasize genetic testing. We utilize whole-genome sequencing, the most comprehensive analysis available. These genetic tests are crucial, as even genetic diagnoses have treatment options that can improve symptoms.

    Continuous Follow up
Ongoing support is crucial. We ensure regular check-ins to provide peace of mind, monitoring and supporting your child’s progress even after the program is completed.

  • What to Expect After a Diagnosis

After your child’s autism assessment process is complete and a diagnosis is made, we explore options that will be most beneficial for your child’s specific needs.
Depending on the root cause of your child’s symptoms, whether they are genetic or acquired, we can recommend two types of treatments:

General Interventions: Regardless of the underlying cause, therapies like occupational, speech, and behavioral therapy can help manage your child’s symptoms and challenges.

Cause-Specific Treatments: If our evaluation uncovers a specific root cause, whether genetic, hypoxia/birth trauma, or autoimmune conditions, we can then pursue treatments targeted to that issue.

Specialized Treatment Options for Regressive Autism

In some cases, children develop normally for one to two years but then lose their ability to communicate, interact, or reach other developmental milestones. This is known as “regressive autism.” When regressive autism is believed to be triggered by a specific event, like brain trauma or neurological inflammation, solutions like hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be recommended.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy at The Brain & Performance Centre involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber using the hypoxic-hyperoxic paradox protocol to promote healing and reduce brain inflammation.
